Deregulated Natural Gas and Electricity Services

On March 14, 1996, the New York State Public Service Commission approved the deregulation of the utility companies in New York State. This deregulation gives consumers the ability to choose a local gas and electricity supplier, known as an Energy Service Company (ESCO).

• When purchasing gas and electricity directly from the utility, the consumer is charged sales tax on the delivery charges and the usage charges.  When using Brown’s Fuel Services as a supplier, the sales tax on the monthly delivery charge is eliminated, saving residential users 4% sales tax and commercial users 8.38% sales tax.

• Retail Choice Credits – In order to promote deregulation and competition, the utility company offers discounted delivery rates, in the form of credits, to any consumer that chooses an ESCO.  This financial incentive is not given to consumers using the utility as a supplier.

• Elimination of Gross Receipts Tax – Consumers that purchase their gas and electricity directly from the utility company are charged a Gross Receipts Tax in addition to the standard sales tax on their monthly bill.  Consumers that purchase their gas and electricity from Brown's Fuel Services are not charged Gross Receipts Tax.

• Choice of Pricing Plans – We offer monthly variable pricing which change according to market condition.  We also offer fixed pricing contracts for a minimum of 12 months when market conditions allow.  The utility only offers a variable rate.
